Yeah, I kind of see them as being silent, but the Jack thing occurred to me too. Maybe they can understand language and speak, but they're more likely to respond with body language first?

In a type of game with a network, for instance, you could have them at the most talkative when texting, and when speaking in a log or over video they could answer questions with nods or shakes of the head or gestures, and speak only when they have to? Have them be quiet, not silent or mute. If that makes sense?

I do find that even having a typed conversation is different than a command, because a command involves one the exiles telling someone to do something, and very rarely resembles a normal conversation.

While mulling this over I got the idea that it could be linked to their role as supposed-game-constructs-who-are-really-more. Like, Jack is supposed to basically be a quest NPC, so of course he'll communicate his quest just fine, he doesn't need to be talking to players about anything else. I don't actually think the carapaces work like that but I thought it was a cool idea and also creepy.

But yeah, I know what you're saying about quiet but not mute, I think that makes plenty of sense. That might also give you enough wiggle room to experiment with while you find a comfortable balance!

And yeah, commands are different it's true, but I do think the exiles are rather conversational about them. They all have a tendency to write like the kids are going to answer them and offer their own commentary. There's also a lot of difference if you compare WV ordering John around to PM being more friendly and cooperative to AR going right straight off the rails with Dave... and while we're at it HB yelling about kissing the girl, and all that. On the whole they don't seem to be clear on what exactly they're doing by typing at kids in a computer (except the queens probably) so they all have their own take on it, and with WV especially you can see him gradually figuring out how to interact with what he's seeing and how to relate to it himself ("ME??"), so there is a LITTLE give and take there. And definitely personality of some sort to be gleaned. It's still not the same as an actual two-sided conversation with someone who really can respond, but it could be worse!

I also just want to point out for the record it's hilarious that PM was just legitimately polite naturally while WV had to eat an etiquette book and go overcompensating supercourteous.

These are really good points! I think this'll be helpful to think about.

Oh yeah, and I get your point about the commands giving a lot of the personality - it's kinda what makes playing an exile so appealing, outside the running gags. I guess it just takes more effort to learn how to play an exile rather than most of the other characters, which is probably why there are so few around.
