While mulling this over I got the idea that it could be linked to their role as supposed-game-constructs-who-are-really-more. Like, Jack is supposed to basically be a quest NPC, so of course he'll communicate his quest just fine, he doesn't need to be talking to players about anything else. I don't actually think the carapaces work like that but I thought it was a cool idea and also creepy.

But yeah, I know what you're saying about quiet but not mute, I think that makes plenty of sense. That might also give you enough wiggle room to experiment with while you find a comfortable balance!

And yeah, commands are different it's true, but I do think the exiles are rather conversational about them. They all have a tendency to write like the kids are going to answer them and offer their own commentary. There's also a lot of difference if you compare WV ordering John around to PM being more friendly and cooperative to AR going right straight off the rails with Dave... and while we're at it HB yelling about kissing the girl, and all that. On the whole they don't seem to be clear on what exactly they're doing by typing at kids in a computer (except the queens probably) so they all have their own take on it, and with WV especially you can see him gradually figuring out how to interact with what he's seeing and how to relate to it himself ("ME??"), so there is a LITTLE give and take there. And definitely personality of some sort to be gleaned. It's still not the same as an actual two-sided conversation with someone who really can respond, but it could be worse!

I also just want to point out for the record it's hilarious that PM was just legitimately polite naturally while WV had to eat an etiquette book and go overcompensating supercourteous.

I'm curious as to whether anyone's played with the idea of Bro being another "splinter" of Dirk's soul due to being the Prince of Heart.

Oh yeah, and I get your point about the commands giving a lot of the personality - it's kinda what makes playing an exile so appealing, outside the running gags. I guess it just takes more effort to learn how to play an exile rather than most of the other characters, which is probably why there are so few around.

Okay, really quick, something that I don't understand. The dominant fanon seems to be that trolls fill pails in front of the imperial drone? Which makes NO SENSE to me, why would it stand around and wait for ten minutes. I always thought trolls simply decaptchalogued pails they had filled beforehand immediately, or else they were culled on the spot. Much quicker and more efficient.

I'm going to be busting out a full length essay for you later this month once APs aren't something to be busting my shame globes over, but for now here's my sort advice: Mediation is simply the basest reason these three trolls are involved in each other's lives, like happy fucking is the basest reason matespritships happen and angry fucking is the basest reason kismesissitudes happen. The emotional depth can be expounded upon from there. In particular, the auspistice and auspisticee likely should have an affection for each other that is almost like moirallegiance, but more black. They may love each other, but not quite enough to be moirails, ideally; the fact is that without the need for mediation, they wouldn't be more than platonically involved. (I personally like to think, for instance, that Karkat has a small ashen crush on Vriska, but obviously he would not want anything else with her.) So for that part of the equation, you might take the life involvement of moirails, and then remove the red elements: Tacklepounces, hugs, and puns probably have less place here.

It is also very important to note that ashen rivals, for whatever reason, do not want to be formal full kismeses. (Or at worst, only one wants to be a kismesis.) For some reason, being mediated is better. If they're doing it right, eventually the auspistice should help them get over any concupiscent desire towards each other they may have. I always feel that on some level the ashen rivals do not view each other as worthy in quite the same way kismeses should, that the central frustrating captivation is not there; even though in a mature auspisticism there may be elements of respect.

That is true, there are some processes by which it could be sufficiently brief for it to be logical. However, full penetrative intercourse likely lasting minutes (which linguistics would suggest trolls have) is not really one of those...

Haha, I'll be honest and tell you that all the hex code comparisons confuse the fuck out of me. My reasoning for seadweller Rose (besides 'it's cool I want to do this yay') is that out of the four kids she's the highest up and THAT TOTALLY MAKES IT LEGIT, RIGHT? The idea was formed before we knew Mom and Bro were dead, so I had MomRose as still the heiress like in your verse -- but older and her meddling moirail much to her chagrin. Her best auspisticie forever ~~and maybe flushcrush shut the fuck up I'm biased okay~~ is a slightly sharper but mostly cute blueblood Jane (with the same cute fangs and horns as her canon logo, and a beast to feed for her lusus -- normal childhood, see!).
